Jessica Reece: Encouragement

It is two weeks into the semester and the Lady Bison basketball team is already working hard both mentally and physically to prepare for the upcoming season.

Encouraging our teammates and working hard are two things we know how to do.  Each player contributes their talents to the team and we respect that each person is different.  That is one of the great things about our team here at Lipscomb, we are a team.  We love each player for who they are and encourage each other and lift one another up when we need it.  Ask any athlete and they will tell you that being on the sidelines is not exactly easy.  That is exactly what I am working through right now.

At the end of last season I found out that I had a stress fracture in my back and was told to sit out while I wore a back brace for 14 weeks, and even after that I am still working my way back into playing and building my strength up so I can play this season.  It is a huge struggle for me and is frustrating to see myself not where I need to be.  However, I can’t imagine trying to retrain myself on a team where I didn’t have the support and backup that I do on this team.

My teammates challenge me to work harder during workouts, but at the same time give me hope and love that I need to succeed in building myself back up into the position where I can play and help out my teammates.  Of all the great qualities I have as a result of being a Lady Bison basketball player, the one trait I have been so blessed to see more recently because of my injury, is the true love the girls on the team have for one another.

I truly believe everything happens for a reason.  Even though being injured is a challenge in many ways, I was opened to see that my teammates are always going to be there for me.  I couldn’t ask for anything else on a basketball team.

Spotlight On: The Players

This week we are putting the spotlight on the entire team.  They have started school which means individual workouts are set to begin, and before you know it the season will be starting!  So as we get ready for another great season of Lady Bison Basketball we want to focus on the whole team and celebrate the dedication it takes to be a true student-athlete.

Inspiration: Top 10 Bible Verses

Most of us use the Bible as a daily source of inspiration and growth.  There are no limits to what the bible can teach us about our lives and how to honor God.  Coach Bennett has listed his favorite Bible verses from which he gains most of his inspiration.

Fashion Trend: Bright Shoes

I have no idea why Coach Mincy asked me to write about fashion, I am not fashionable in the slightest.  However, I have noticed a trend in footwear this summer: brighter is better!  Our head coach came in during May rocking a pair of black and neon green shoes.  I made some smart aleck comment about how recruits will be able to spot him in the gym even if the lights go out!  He said at least they would notice him.  And as usual he was right!  You wouldn't believe how many people have commented on his shoes.  They really do grab people's attention whether it is a recruit or fellow coach.  Several AAU programs wore neon shoes this summer that didn't match their uniform at all.  While comfort has always been my personal reason for selecting a shoe, it appears color needs to be moving up that list.  Good luck & God bless!

Jana Wright #4

Hey!!  My name is Jana (Yah-na), a simple four letter word but a pain to pronounce.  I was born and raised in the city of Miami, FL home of the beaches and fun in the sun.  Personally, I love my home city, but will not attend a Miami Heat game even if I had floor seats next to tons of celebrities.  The choice to be an athlete was not an option growing up, being that both my mother and brother received athletic scholarships as well. I’m a freshman here at Lipscomb University and I’m looking to major in Exercise Science, in hopes to become a licensed Physical Therapist.  Aside from basketball and school I love to listen to music, shop, and go out with friends and family.

Anna Bowers #2

I grew up in Nashville and went to The Ensworth School from 3rd through 12th grade. I played every sport offered to girls except volleyball, cross country, swimming, and bowling over the course of middle and high school.  I have three younger siblings: Richard age 20 (Junior at Samford), Andrew age 17 (Junior at Ensworth), and Mary Rae age 15 (Freshman at Ensworth).  I have one dog named Rosie.  I have two parents, both graduated from Lipscomb sometime in the 80s (Debbie and tricky Ricky). In my free time that I don't have much of, I play the guitar, read fabulous books, and pray.  I have no plan for my future other than to spread the Word, and attempt to understand God's plan for me.  I do alright in school, though I am growing less and less fond of it.  I enjoy the wilderness, spending time with people one on one, coffee, eating, tossin' da rock, listening to good music, going to Haiti, and excitedly my cooking skills are much improving, thus I enjoy it.  I will be 22 years old Nov. 24.

Erika Thornsberry #54

I'm Erika Thornsberry.  I'm from a small farm town called St. Marys, Ohio. At my high school we had a day for everyone that owned a tractor to drive it to school on FFA week!  St. Marys is a small community with a lot of town pride and everyone knows everyone.  So getting thrown into the big city has been a change.  I love being with my family and friends.  I'm a tomboy but have my girly side. I love mudding!!  Getting on a four wheeler right after it rains is the best thing in the world!  And of course fishing with the best friend Liz Sampson is a must, plus getting a little dirt under your finger nails at the softball diamond.   After all that is done take me to the closest mall and it's game over.  I love clothes!  Right now its been a struggle, check out my closet in the dorm and you will get lost with all the clothes.  At the end of the day there is nothing in the world I would change for my awesome family that I LOVE so much!!  And of course GO LADY BISONS!!!

Sasha Robinson #51

Hey guys!!  I’m Sasha Robinson!  I’m a native of Marietta, Georgia, right outside of Atlanta, Georgia. I’m a freshman here at Lipscomb University and I’m looking to major in Sustainability, or better known as environmental science.  So ultimately means that I’m a tree hugger.  I went to a private school called St. Francis High School in Alpharetta, Ga.  I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters, making me the middle child.  A few characteristics about me is that I’m funny, approachable, outgoing, and a person that you would love to be around.  Some hobbies of mine are that I like to hang out with friends, SHOP, play basketball, and laugh.  An interesting fact about me is that I’ve been to Rome, Italy and that I plan to visit all 7 continents in the world.  My favorite books of all time are Beach Road and Animal Farm.  I’m definitely a sports girl so I love to watch basketball and football.  My favorite basketball player is Derrick Rose and my favorite basketball team is the L.A. Lakers.

Chelsea McMeans #44

My name is Chelsea McMeans, and here at Lipscomb they call me “Chex".  I‘m from La Vernia, a small town located just outside of San Antonio, Texas.  I’m a junior, majoring in biology and hope to be accepted into medical school after I graduate.  I play the forward and center position and have been playing basketball since kindergarten.  Although I played multiple sports in high school, basketball is my true love.  My club basketball team was TeamXpress.  I have one brother named Noah who is a freshman in high school playing football and basketball.  I was just recently ENGAGED to my high school sweetheart, Mitchel Grams.  He is in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University.  I consider myself a movie buff and have a great collection to show for it.  My favorite color is orange and my favorite food is POPCORN!

Jessica Reece #42

Hi!  I'm Jess Reece.  I am a sophomore psychology major from Asheville, NC.  I am so thankful for my close friends and my loving, ridiculous family!  I am totally in love with elephants and giraffes.  They are my absolute favorite :)  I'm basically a little kid trapped in a big kid's body... and I'm so okay with that!

Brittany Duerk #40

Hey I’m Britt, I’m a senior this year with hopes of entering pharmacy school next fall.   I am a biochemistry major and am currently doing research with anticancer drugs.  And yes I do realize that makes me a chemistry nerd…trust me my teammates and coaches will never let me forget it either.  I have also thrown javelin for three years on the track team.  Basketball has always been my passion but in recent years I have also developed a love for cooking, especially desserts, which my roommates and boyfriend seem to enjoy as well. I’ve been involved with the Big Brother Big Sister organization for a year and it has been one of the best experiences of my life. I know my teammate and roommate of 4 years, Leah McAlister, would not let me live it down if I didn’t include something about my “mild obsession” with penguins.  And no I have no idea why I love them so much but I do.  I never leave for a road trip without my penguin pillow pet and I’m proud of it (even if O’Neisha continually tries to steal it).   Well that about does it, until next time.

Morgan Faulkner #34

Hi, I'm Morgan, and I am a junior here at Lipscomb.  I am an exercise science major with thoughts of attending physical therapy school or becoming a dietitian!  Jackson, Tennessee is my home. I have a wonderful family including: my two loving parents, my older sister, Mallory (who is married and in Med school; she's awesome!), and two younger brothers/dogs, Murphy and Marley (ha!).  I love being a Lady Bison and am looking forward to a wonderful season!

Leah McAlister #32

I am a 22 year old biology major from Nolensville TN. I am planning to go to medical school after college, and I have enjoyed and been blessed by Lipscomb's pre-med program. I really enjoy science, the human body specifically. It has been challenging to juggle school and basketball, but it has definitely been fulfilling. I'm ready and looking forward to my senior season and all that it has in store for me. I really enjoy reading, listening to music, laughing, rock climbing, singing, meeting new people, and hanging out with friends.

Hannah Phillips #30

I'm from Brentwood, TN and went to Brentwood High School.  I played soccer and basketball my whole life until college.  My favorite color is green.  I love to dance and be goofy.  I especially love to read.  I love all country music and going to concerts with my roomie Morgan Faulkner.  I have a cat named Kitty.  I'm a psychology major and a spanish minor.  I am only a good singer in the car by myself and I might tryout for American Idol...someday.  I love all types of desserts and enjoy presents throughout the day.  If I could live off of Buddy the Elf's food groups I would!

Kateca Favors #24

Hi, my name is Kateca Favors. I'm a freshman basketball player at Lipscomb University originally from Atlanta, Ga. I was born on November 1, 1992, so I'm 18 years old :) I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters back home. Besides basketball, my new found favorite thing to do is sleep. I absolutely love music (never leave without my headphones). My favorite food is seafood, mainly crab legs :)) I'm a great cook if i must say so myself.

O'Neisha Smith #22

I am O'Neisha Smith, I was born on May 23, 1992 in Toronto Canada.  I have four sister and no brothers. My mommy is my best friend, my twin, my everything.  I have a strong relationship with the Lord that is what keeps me sane!  I love to smile, I always say that I have a smiling disorder, because I smile so much!  My favorite thing to do is eat.  I have a bad habit of chewing on crushed ice but it is soothing to me.  I love extra Mayo on just about everything that requires it.  I see myself as a very outgoing person that likes to make people laugh.

Shanice Burnette #20

The name is Shanice Burnette. I'm from Winchester, TN, a place that you would not like to visit because there is absolutely nothing to do there!! On another note, I come from a big family, and I'm a mama's girl, not afraid to admit it. I love to be outside but not when it’s too hot, and I love being around people. I hate shopping because I'm no good at it. I LOVE to watch Disney Channel, which means I'm a big kid at heart. I think I’m addicted to pizza because I eat it at least one time a day. My favorite things to do are play basketball, smile, and laugh. I've been playing basketball since the third grade and smiling and laughing my whole life. I’m a freshman this year at Lipscomb University and my intended major is Elementary Education. I chose this because I love to be around little kids, they are the cutest and funniest things ever!! In the end this is basically my life summary so far, so stay tuned because there's more to come!
